Video Conferencing
Video conferencing is now no longer considered a rarity, rather it is used on a daily basis as a means of communication across the globe.
Skype is a video, audio call and instant messaging piece of software that has typically been used by businesses as a means of holding meetings and by people to stay in touch with family and friends across the globe.
However, Skype also has its role in education, as on 11th September 2013, on the P.G.C.E course, I had the opportunity to observe a science lesson on sound in a school in Cornwall via Skype. The slideshow below shows some images from this session. This highlighted to me the possibilities of using technology in the classroom and in my future practice Skype would be a useful tool to use to communicate with other schools during lessons to make learning interactive, fun and engaging.
The information about Mystery Skype below indicates further the use of video conferencing in education.

Mystery Skype
Another innovative way to get children using ICT in the classroom is through Skype. Skype can be used by children to communicate with other children in classrooms all over the world! I investigated Mystery Skype after receiving an email from a teacher on the PGCE and I found that it is a brilliant way of broadening children’s horizons and teaching them about geography, history, science, languages, maths and problem solving, as well as the wider world and different communities.
Mystery Skype is an educational game suitable for all ages and it is played by two classrooms using Skype. The game has been invented by teachers and the aim is to guess the location of the other classroom by asking each other questions. The website, which can be accessed by clicking the Mystery Skype logo above, is simple and straightforward to use and teachers and children can take part by registering on the website. The image below taken from the website outlines the process of taking part in Mystery Skype.

There are 3 ways the game can be played:
1. 20 Questions
2. Yes or No Answers
3. Mystery Skype Jobs
Yet each of these ways involves the class working as a team which builds on their communication skills.
Thus there are numerous advantages of using Mystery Skype in the classroom, not just a means of bringing ICT into the classroom and learning about subjects, but also a way of broadening children’s knowledge of the outside world and improving their social skills. This is something I would like to try in my classroom in order to allow children to develop their speaking and listening skills, as well as their subject knowledge.
