My school placements on the P.G.C.E course
Over the course of my P.G.C.E I have had the opportunity to be placed in a range of different schools which have enabled me to develop my skills and understanding towards becoming a outstanding teacher.
Over the course of my P.G.C.E I have had the opportunity to be placed in a range of different schools which have enabled me to develop my skills and understanding towards becoming a outstanding teacher.
Guided Professional Placement (GPP)
During this P.G.C.E my first placement was in Key Stage 2 in a school in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Tameside where I spent 4 weeks working with and teaching a Year 6 class. My class had an above average number of SEN pupils and this was an invaluable opportunity for me to develop my knowledge and application of differentiation and develop my knowledge of inclusion. This experience also gave me the opportunity to work with older children who were working up to their SATs and experience the pressures a year 6 teacher faces in terms of progression. I was able to spend some time in EYFS, teach a range of subjects, and visit the Blue Planet Aquarium with the class on a school trip.
Following this I spent 4 weeks in a school in Rochdale teaching Year 4. This opportunity gave me the chance to work in a team of enthusiastic staff in a vibrant school dedicated to outdoor learning. The school has already begun working from the New Curriculum and this placement was an opportunity for me to experience what they new National Curriculum looks like in practice. I was able to spend time in other year groups to teach and observe lessons and go on walking trips with my class to discover the history of the school and the surrounding areas.
I also had the opportunity to experience a range of ICT while on my placements which you can read about here.
Key Stage 3 Placement
My Key Stage 3 placement was based in a high achieving Grammar School in Mirfield, West Yorkshire where I acted as a teaching assistant and had the opportunity to experience Maths, English and Science at Key Stage 3. The purpose of the Key Stage 3 placement was an opportunity to gain an insight into the transition between primary and secondary school. I found this placement particularly insightful as I had taught year 6 on my first placement and it was interesting to see the next step in education for children when they leave primary school. The transition from primary school to ‘big’ school can be a daunting experience for the majority of pupils and this week long placement was an opportunity for me to interact with year 7 pupils who have successfully experienced this change.
Pathway Placement
As part of the P.G.C.E the University of Manchester encourages the trainees to explore an area of teaching which they find particularly interesting or they may like to specialise in later on in their careers. My first choice was to focus on inclusion due to my background in educational psychology; however, I undertook the teaching and learning pathway in order to further strengthen my pedagogical knowledge. I was based in a two-form entry school in Rochdale for my pathway placement and I was able to observe lessons across all the year groups in both Key Stage 1 and 2.
Final Professional Placement (FPP)
For my final placement I have been placed in Key Stage 1 in a Year 2 class in a Church of England Primary School in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Tameside. I am looking forward to this experience as I have not had much experience in Key Stage 1 and I am excited about broadening my skills working with younger pupils and I am looking forward to many ‘light bulb’ moments!
